CBN-LA Statement against Police Brutality and Racism
The Council of Black Nurses-Los Angeles (CBN-LA) recognizes that police brutality and racism in its institutional, structural, and systemic forms is an urgent threat to public health because it significantly impacts the social , economic, and health outcomes of African American families and individuals. CBN-LA denounces racism as a root cause of health disparities and unequal to healthcare. We stand in solidarity with our community and oppose all forms of injustice, including any racist and discriminatory policies across healthcare settings. We also demand an end to the senseless acts of violence being perpetuated at the hands of law enforcement against members of our community. We stand ready to support the tremendous work that still needs to be done to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to achieve optimal health.

Dear Members and Colleagues,
The Council of Black Nurses Los Angeles (CBN-LA) is the oldest chapter in the National Black Nurses Association founded in 1968. The wisdom and courage of its founding leaders Dr. Betty Smith Williams and Barbara Johnson brought forth an organization founded on principles of structure and leadership. CBN-LA has a rich history and a solid foundation. CBN-LA is firmly rooted in the nursing profession and its membership represents nurses from multiple arenas of nursing and healthcare communities in and around Los Angeles. We look forward to increasing our membership of new nurses, while retaining our seasoned nurses who can mentor the younger generations. Furthermore, we are excited to serve the Los Angeles community. One of the missions of CBN-LA is to address health disparities in communities of color. Members advocate for health education and firmly believe they are the bridge between medical professionals and people of color who are unwilling to seek advice from a medical professional. We intend to focus on providing education to our community, on various platforms, so that we may reach the under-served and underrepresented populations. CBN-LA is 50+ years strong, with much work to be done. We are in need of mentors, educators and leaders. We are confident that every nurse and student nurse fits into one of these categories. Together we can improve the overall health of our community. We can build an organization that is full of local and national leaders. And we can be the change our community needs for healthier living practices. This organization has impacted the careers of many nurses and continues to be a beacon in the nursing community. Please join us in serving our community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. CBN-LA needs you, and so does the community. Become a member today! Sincerely, CBN-LA, Executive Board |
